Under Construction: Torre Fira, Barcelona / Toyo Ito
The extension of Fira de Barcelona in Montjuic is designed with half of its facilities within the municipality of Barcelona and half outside it, on the other side of the Montjuïc mountain, following the Gran Via de las Cortes Catalanes in the direction of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The Japanese architect Toyo Ito won the competition a few years ago to develop the master plan project.
The exhibition center is comprised of 9 blocks (already built) and Two Towers (under construction) 114 meters high, which will be used one for the other as hotel and office building. These towers are, by far, the tallest buildings in Hospitalet. The hotel will be the second tallest hotel in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
The buildings have various energy saving systems, a system for collection and reuse of water and a solar energy collection. Each building has a symbolic organic form, which reminds us the elements found in nature, such as rivers and clouds. Allow natural light inside minimizes their need for artificial lighting as well as being designed with a continuity of spaces fairly fluently. The towers are scheduled to be completed in the year 2009 and have been conceived as an architectural icon for the area, the first, red and curvaceous tower, the hotel will serve as a counterpoint to the other a translucent prism housed in its inside a red silhouette and organic to the office building.
