New Construction

The culture minister, Carmen Calvo, introduced the expansion of the Prado Museum, whose centerpiece is the new building of Rafael Moneo. The cube designed by the architect includes in its interior cloister of the church of the Jeronimos.

The cloister, cloistered

The new facilities, including the cloister of Los Jeronimos church in Madrid, adding 22,513 square feet to the Museum. To Rafale of Moneo, the architect, the expansion has been the most respectful possible "with the old building of Villanueva, who joined by a catwalk.

Look at Villanueva

Natural Light

Moneo building stands out for its particular geometry and solid brick walls with openings framed in bronze. The architect has taken advantage of the characteristics of the faculty of Jerónimos to install a skylight that radiates light all around it stays down to the temporary exhibition rooms through a sculptural steel structure covered with transparent glass designed as a flashlight .

A sculpture at the door

The main facade of the new building stands out for its row of columns at the level of the cloister and the monumental gateway, patinated bronze designed by Cristina Iglesias. New rooms

The new building devoted a substantial part of its expansion to accommodate departments and services related to the conservation of works from the collection and maintenance of the building that housed. However, the exhibition and cultural activity will increase significantly as the new exhibition halls with an area of 1,386 square meters, divided into three main rooms of around 400 meters each and a room a little smaller of 95 meters.

Lobby connection

The large hall in the connection between the Moneo building and the main focus Villanueva Visitor Service (ticketing, information, wardrobes ,...) as well as the new shop and cafe. All this at more than 2,000 square meters.
